Can excesssive use of ambien (for sleeping at night) cause

Thanks for the question. No, excessive usage of ambien should not cause any permanent brain damage because this medication is not toxic to brain cells.

Please ask if there are any further questions.

Best regards Dr Sathya.

Thanks for the question.

No, excessive usage of ambien should not cause any permanent brain damage because this medication is not toxic to brain cells.

However excessive use for long time may make a person addicted or dependent on this medication. The chances of developing addiction or dependence is not very high, especially compared to some other sleep meds like diazepam or lorazepam etc, however ambien does carry a small risk of developing dependence or getting addicted on long term use.

Also excessive usage of this med can make somebody drowsy during the day, affect the memory, concentration etc. All these side effects are reversible once the medication is stopped, so this drug is not known to cause any permanent brain damage.
