Consult a healthcare provider immediay if you experience side effects. Allergies. Avoid in people with a known allergy or sensitivity to chondroitin sulfate.

Use cautiously in people who have skin conditions. Chondroitin may cause hair loss, hives, rash, skin irritation, and sun sensitivity.

Avoid in people who are at risk of or have prostate cancer. Chondroitin may promote spread or recurrence of prostate cancer.

Use cautiously in people who have glaucoma. Chondroitin may increase eye pressure.

Chondroitin is possibly safe when injected into the muscle or vein.

Chondroitin may increase the risk of bleeding.

Each monosaccharide may be left unsulfated, sulfated once, or sulfated twice. In the most common scenario, the hydroxyls of the 4 and 6 positions of the N-acetyl-galactosamine are sulfated, with some chains having the 2 position of glucuronic acid. Sulfation is mediated by specific sulfotransferases. Sulfation in these different positions confers specific biological activities to chondroitin GAG chains.

Chondroitin sulfate readily interacts with proteins in the extracellular matrix due to its negative charges.
