Administration advice : -Take with meals -Gastrointestinal tolerability may be improved by a slow increase in dosage. -Extended-release product: Take with evening meal; swallow whole; do not crush, cut, dissolve, or chew General : -Not for use in patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. -Temporarily stop treatment prior to radiologic studies utilizing iodinated contrast materials and for surgical procedures when restricted food or fluid intake is expected; may resume once adequate renal function is confirmed.

GENERIC NAME: metformin BRAND NAME: Glucophage, Glucophage XR, Glumetza, Fortamet, Riomet DRUG CLASS AND MECHANISM: Metformin is an oral medication that lowers blood glucose (sugar) by influencing the body's sensitivity to insulin and is used for treating type 2 diabetes. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that controls glucose levels in blood by reducing the amount of glucose made by the liver and by increasing the removal of glucose from the blood by muscle and fat tissues. As a result, insulin causes blood glucose levels fall.

Learn about indications, dosage and how it is supplied for the drug Glucophage, Glucophage XR (Metformin Hcl).

The usual starting dose of GLUCOPHAGE XR (metformin hydrochloride) Extended-Release Tablets is 500 mg once daily with the evening meal. Dosage increases should be made in increments of 500 mg weekly, up to a maximum of 2000 mg once daily with the evening meal. If glycemic control is not achieved on GLUCOPHAGE XR 2000 mg once daily, a trial of GLUCOPHAGE XR 1000 mg twice daily should be considered. If higher doses of metformin are required, GLUCOPHAGE should be used at total daily doses up to 2550 mg administered in divided daily doses, as described above.
