Controlled studies in animals and man have shown no stimulation of any pituitary hormone by ZANTAC (ranitidine hcl) and no antiandrogenic activity, and cimetidine-induced gynecomastia and impotence in hypersecretory patients have resolved when ZANTAC (ranitidine hcl) has been substituted. However, occasional cases of impotence and loss of libido have been reported in male patients receiving ZANTAC (ranitidine hcl), but the incidence did not differ from that in the general population.

Nervous system side effects have been reported rarely. These have included headache (sometimes severe), somnolence, dizziness, malaise, and vertigo. Reversible mental confusion, agitation, depression, and hallucinations have been reported, predominantly in severely ill elderly patients. Hostility, mania, mental status changes, dystonia, reversible involuntary motor disturbances have also been reported.

Hepatic side effects have included transient and minor increases in serum transaminases, which may be important in patients with liver disease.

GENERIC NAME: ranitidine BRAND NAME: Zantac DRUG CLASS AND MECHANISM: Ranitidine is an oral drug that blocks the production of acid by acid-producing cells in the stomach. It belongs to a class of drugs called H2 (histamine-2) blockers that also includes cimetidine (Tagamet), nizatidine (Axid), and famotidine (Pepcid). Histamine is a naturally-occurring chemical that stimulates cells in the stomach (parietal cells) to produce acid. H2-blockers inhibit the action of histamine on the cells, thus reducing the production of acid by the stomach.
