Salazopyrin (sulfasalazine) - Information about this drug Uniprix

Sulfasalazine belongs to the class of medications called anti-inflammatories. It is used for conditions other than those listed in these drug information articles.

Anemia: Sulfasalazine may cause low levels of red blood cells. If you experience symptoms of reduced red blood cell count ( anemia) such as shortness of breath, feeling unusually tired or pale skin, contact your doctor as soon as possible.

Your doctor may have suggested this medication for conditions other than those listed in these drug information articles. If you have not discussed this with your doctor or are not sure why you are taking this medication, speak to your doctor. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor.

Patient level information — UpToDate offers two types of patient education materials.

In many cases, sulfasalazine or a 5-aminosalicylate must be taken for a long period of time. These medications can have side effects ranging from mild to serious. Many of the mild side effects can be avoided by using lower doses of these drugs; the serious side effects are uncommon or rare, and usually resolve when the medication is stopped. In most cases, the potential benefits of these drugs outweigh the potential risks.
