General side effects including insomnia (8% to 13%), fatigue (2% to 15%), decreased appetite (3% to 11%), asthenia (2% to 8%), anorexia (3% to 5%), pyrexia.

In placebo controlled trials, patients treated with duloxetine (the active ingredient contained in Cymbalta) for up to 9 weeks had an average weight loss of approximay 0.5 kg compared to an average weight gain of 0.2 kg in placebo treated patients. Tinnitus has been reported upon treatment discontinuation.

Immunologic side effects including seasonal allergy have been reported.

Behavioral - Cognitive Relaxation Techniques There are several relaxation techniques that have been helpful in treating insomnia. Some of these can be done by one-self. Others may require a tape, CD or technician to facilitate:

Use of sedative medications for sleep problems must be closely monitored by your health care provider. Your body can become dependent (withdrawal symptoms upon discontinuing) to these medications. Your body may also become tolerant (medication becomes ineffective) to these medications. These medications for sleep problems can last a long time in your body. The effects of lack of sleep may include physical and mental symptoms, but are these insomnia side effects really as bad as it sounds?.

As I pointed out in this article on effects of sleep deprivation, people who do not allow themselves to get the amount of sleep they need should not be compared with insomnia sufferers. If you are staying awake on purpose just to get more time in the day to finish all your endless tasks — or to entertain yourself — then you may be asking for trouble down the road. I say “may” because it is not a certainty. If you are in excellent health and are suffering no effects from your self-induced sleep deprivation, then it’s probably OK to sleep a little less than you need.
