Tegretol and Weight Gain Epilepsy Foundation

I have been on tegratol for almost 1 year now and have put on about 15 pds, mostly in my mid-section. Very upsetting as i cannot seem to do anything to get it off.

I am also on Tegretol CR 200mgs per day. I actually LOST weight. I find that in the first few hours after I take it, my appetite decreases. However, I also suffer from anxiety as well, so that could also play a factor in my loss of appetite. But recently, I have been free of anxiety, and my weight has still maintained to be on the lower scale.

hi i'm a newbie to tegretol i have been having seziures for over 6 month and they finally put me on medication for it, and weight gain was a big issue when discussing which medication they should put me on as i am only 17 and alway through my session with him he asured me that weight gain is not known on tegretol if anything it supresses your apputite and he also told me that it is safe to get pregnant on so i wouldnt have to change my medication so who do i believe because everyone on here is sayin that it cause's weight gain and you can not take it while your pregnant which is everything my consultant reasured me wouldnt happen ??????????

By the way....DO NOT GO LOW CARB! Carbs are brain food and if you are epileptic you NEED CARBS.

Tegretol Drug and Medication User Reviews on RxList

Users share their experience with Tegretol and comment on drug side effects, I'm gaining weight despite daily exercise and a lowfat diet (7 pounds in 8 weeks.).

I have not experienced any side effects that I know of and I have been on this drug for ten years.

Tegretol seems to help me identify my depression from periods when I'm manic; this helps because knowing what mode I'm in, I can treat the symptoms of depression like not being too hard on myself, knowing my limitations, accepting them, be kind to myself, make sure that I eat. When I realize that I'm manic, I treat the symptoms by taking a walk to release increased energy & journaling to purge myself of racy thoughts.

Four young patients who developed weight gain induced by carbamazepine therapy are described. The patients received the carbamazepine as anticonvulsant treatment, and soon after starting the drug, abruptly developed an increase in appetite with a concomitant increase in food intake. During a period of 2 months the patients' weights rose by between 7 and 15 kg. Dietary restriction during the carbamazepine treatment was ineffective in promoting weight loss, and loss of the excess weight was achieved only when the drug was discontinued. These patients demonstrate an as yet unpublished adverse effect of carbamazepine. In carbamazepine-induced weight gain, overeating and fat deposition must be taken into consideration as a differential diagnosis to the hitherto described water retention and edema.
